Before ordering, I verify four things: the factory authorization letter, the warranty term in writing, installation training, and parts availability for at least the next 10 years.
The trigger that made me strict about this? A vendor failure in March 2023. We bought 40 iPERL meters from a distributor who quoted a great price but wouldn't confirm the warranty term. Should I buy a used Fluke 187 multimeter?

How do IFM sensors compare with Omron and Keyence?
Short answer: they compete well, but differently. IFM's strength is robustness and simplicity—German-engineered housings that hold up in washdown and dusty environments. Omron's edge is breadth: sensors to PLCs, all in one ecosystem, which makes integration painless if you're already an Omron house. Keyence is the premium innovator, with genuinely impressive detection technology and software—but you pay for that, and lead times can be longer.
We ran a nine-month head-to-head trial in 2024 for a fill-level application: IFM, Omron, and Keyence. Never expected the budget option to win. The IFM unit cost about 30% less than the Keyence and performed just as well over the trial in a dusty environment. The surprise wasn't the cost difference. It was how much of the price gap comes down to features you may never use. If you're already standardized on Omron or Keyence for other reasons, the integration value might outweigh the price gap. If you're starting fresh, in my opinion, spec the sensor to the environment first and let the brand be secondary.
What hidden costs should I ask about before ordering?
I learned this one the expensive way. In my first year of purchasing, I ordered what looked like the cheapest Sensus quote on paper.
