Sensus 2 Inch Water Meter, Multimeter Test Leads, and True RMS: A Buyer's Guide
There's No Single “Right” Meter
If you send me an email asking, “What should we order?” I'll probably reply with a question. Not because I'm trying to be difficult. A 287 true RMS multimeter is a serious instrument. It can log data, display multiple readings, and measure non-sinusoidal waveforms accurately. If your work involves variable frequency drives, motor controls, or equipment that draws distorted current, True RMS matters. A standard averaging meter might give you a number that looks plausible but misses the actual heating effect.
That said, I've also seen a manager buy this meter for a technician whose daily work is checking 24V controls and wall receptacles. That's overkill. Not because the meter isn't capable—it is—but because the extra complexity slows you down when you only need a quick pass/fail check. The 287's safety rating, according to the product datasheet, is CAT IV 600V / CAT III 1000V. If you're not working near those levels, you're paying for margin you may not use.
Practical way to decide:
- Need data logging and advanced troubleshooting? A 287 true RMS multimeter is worth the cost.
- Need a good, dependable meter for mixed electrical work? Look for True RMS in a simpler, cheaper model.
- Need to check sensors and low-voltage circuits? Buy good test leads and save the money.
What I tell our managers: “If you're sure the tech works with VFDs or has to log readings, buy the 287. If you're not sure, buy a simpler True RMS meter and a good set of leads. It will cover most scenarios and leaves room in the budget for the next request.”
How to Tell Which Scenario You're In
Before you call a supplier, ask three questions. First, what exactly are we measuring? Water flow, AC voltage, or current on a motor drive? That determines the meter family. Second, who will use it? A single maintenance tech has different needs from a team covering multiple buildings and one apprentice who might leave with a test lead. Third, what does the spec or the manufacturer's sheet require? If the engineer specified a Sensus 2 inch water meter, don't downgrade at the manufacturer level. If the plant manager specified CAT III leads, buy CAT III.
The last question is about order size. I've placed $200 orders with suppliers who treated me like a future customer, and $20,000 orders with suppliers who made me feel like a number. The $200 supplier won more of my business over time. So if a distributor asks extra questions about a small order, that's not annoying. That's a sign they care.
