How to tell which scenario you're in
I'm the person who signs the purchase orders for a mid-sized industrial services company. About 300 employees, three locations, and somewhere north of $80,000 per year in test and measurement equipment. My official title is office administrator, not engineer. When someone in our company asks for 'a meter,' the request usually means one of three very different things. Similar words, very different solutions. In my experience, most measurement requests fall into one of three scenarios:
Scenario A: You need continuous, billing-grade water consumption data at fixed locations.

Scenario C: You need accurate dimensional measurements for quality checks.
The hard part isn't choosing a product. It is determining which scenario you are in. Here is how I navigate each one.
Scenario A: Permanent water monitoring—where a Sensus smart water meter belongs
When a utility, campus, or large facility needs to track each building's water use continuously, you're not buying a sensor. You're buying a system: the meter, the communication module, and the data platform that turns readings into bills or reports. A Sensus smart water meter fits this scenario well, especially if you need long-term reliability and remote reads that the Sensus iPERL line and similar models provide.
But here's what I only learned after making a mistake: the meter is half the story. In 2023, we were sub-metering a new warehouse wing. I collected two bids, both specifying a Sensus smart water meter with the same AMI radio package. The price difference was less than 3%. I was about to approve the cheaper one when a colleague who'd managed municipal metering projects asked me, 'Who handles Sensus support if the data connection drops?' Good question. Here's my counter-intuitive advice: if you maintain many sites and don't yet know your consumption patterns, buy one portable ultrasonic flow meter before you expand your permanent network. In 2024, we nearly added 30 new metering points because operations suspected that two zones were consuming far more than expected. I bought a small batch of budget digital calipers so our maintenance and QA techs would each have one. The displays were clear and the jaws felt tight at first. Within four months, two of the units were drifting by 0.05 to 0.08 mm. Our QA tech didn't notice until a customer's independent inspection caught it. We spent about $1,400 on re-inspection, freight, and the awkward client call. I only truly believed in buying quality calipers after that experience.
Do you always need the most expensive caliper? No. For rough dimensional checks where tolerances are loose, a simpler unit can be fine. But if the reading will go into a quality report, calibration record, or customer document, the tool is part of your brand. The client can't see your procedure; they see the number. When they act on that number, they're trusting the tool behind it. Losing that trust to save $80 per caliper is not a bargain.
When you need a micrometer: how to calibrate a Mitutoyo micrometer
For tolerances tighter than a caliper can support—anything around 0.01 mm or below—you need a micrometer. Many shops already own Mitutoyo micrometers. At some point, someone will ask how to calibrate a Mitutoyo micrometer without sending it to a lab for weeks.
The good news: you can verify micrometers in-house. Our routine: after a drop or impact, and at least every six months.
- Clean the anvil and spindle faces with a soft, lint-free cloth and a light solvent. A tiny piece of grit on the face changes the reading.
- Close the micrometer using the ratchet or friction thimble and check the zero reading. On a 0–25 mm micrometer, it should sit at 0.000 mm. Mitutoyo digital models let you set zero with the Origin button.
- Measure gauge blocks across the working range, for example 5, 10, 15, and 25 mm. The gauge blocks need NIST-traceable calibration, and the room should be close to the ISO 1 standard reference temperature of 20 °C.
- Write down each reading and compare it to the tolerance stated in the micrometer's manual. If something is off by more than the manufacturer's limit, don't try to adjust the frame yourself.
- Send it to a calibration laboratory that follows ISO/IEC 17025 for repair and accredited calibration.
That routine doesn't replace an accredited calibration, but it catches drift before it reaches a customer. Learning how to calibrate a Mitutoyo micrometer is really about making your quality data defensible. If you can't show a recent verification record, a questionable measurement becomes your liability.
How to tell which scenario you're in
If you're still unsure which product belongs on your purchase order, walk through these questions:

When a single project spans multiple scenarios, start with the measurement that will be seen by someone outside your company. That's where equipment quality is really judged.
My final thought: I used to believe that my job was to find the cheapest way to satisfy an internal request. After years of signing for instruments, I know better. My real job is protecting the company's credibility, and the cheapest way to do that is to buy tools and support that the people using them can trust. That's not an indulgence—it's the lowest-cost route to keeping a customer's confidence.
